Governor Stein Declares June 14 as Flag Day

Honoring the history of our nation's flag

Raleigh, NC – In commemoration of “Old Glory,” Governor Josh Stein has declared June 14, 2026, as Flag Day in North Carolina. This national day of observance recognizes the adoption of the flag of the United States by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. All North Carolinians are encouraged to display the U.S. flag at full staff to honor our country, history, service members, and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

“Today, on the 249th birthday of our nation’s flag, we honor all those who have sacrificed for the freedoms it represents,” said Governor Josh Stein. “As North Carolinians, we can take special pride in being represented by both a star and a stripe. In this year of America 250, let us reaffirm our own commitment to a government of, by, and for the people.”

This year marks the 249th anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a nationally observed event in 1916. In 1949, the U.S. Congress designated June 14 as National Flag Day, a day that also commemorates the birthday of the U.S. Army.

Historically, Flag Day has been celebrated with special events such as parades, essay contests, and ceremonies, often sponsored by veterans’ groups or civic organizations. These events recognize the traditions, pride, and respect that the flag, with its 13 stripes and 50 stars, represents.
